The North Rome Railway
THE CHARM OF TRAIN

Gianfranco Lelmi

Dating back to 1886, the project intended to connect Rome, the countries of Tuscia Viterbo, by a narrow gauge railway. In December of 1906 began passenger service between Rome and Civita Castellana (53.5 km), narrow-gauge rail that ran along the ancient Via Flaminia.
In 1908 the Joint-Stock Company of Electric Railway Tramway Rome - Civita Castellana - Viterbo
obtained the concession to extend the line to Viterbo.

On October 9, 1912 was inaugurated the rail link between Civita Castellana - Fabrica di Roma, 16 December of the same year he left the service Fabrica - Vignanello, March 19, 1913
Vignanello - Soriano, October 9, 1913 began to operate passenger service to Viterbo.
Thanks to the project plan engineer Joniaux, the coordination of the engineer Angelelli the work was completed.
To make the connection Civita Castellana - Fabrica di Roma, the monumental gate in Ponte Clementine was demolished, now located at the entrance of the cemetery of Civita Castellana.
The poor travelers and reduced freight traffic forced the company to stand in liquidation.
In 1921 was established the Northern Roman Railways Company. In 1925 by the engineer Besenzanica studied a new path and in 1931, received the act of concession and started works.

Four thousand five hundred workers, organized on 24-hour shifts, in eight months, had built the  electrified railway standard gauge, Rome - Civita Castellana - Viterbo, in 1932 at a cost of about one hundred million lire. The line in Fabrica di Roma was connected to the railways. The inauguration took place on October 27, 1932 by the then head of government: Benito Mussolini.

To date, this former railway line, it still works, the old trains of 1932 were in service until the year 2011. Now they are at the mercy of vandals in Fabrica di Roma, in Soriano nel Cimino, Vitorchiano, Viterbo. Increasingly insistent voices, talk of a future dismantling  trafficking Civita Castellana - Viterbo. In recent years, four races were suppressed. The scheduling between a train and the other is over three hours. Passengers due rare rans are scarce, there is also lack of the anti-avoidance controls. Buses COTRAL start at the same time of train, it is favored road transport, with increasing pollution.

Yet on the path Rome - Civita Castellana and Civita Castellana - Viterbo train is faster than the bus and the car. The railway Rome - Capranica - Viterbo already existed when it was designed the Rome-Civita Castellana-Viterbo. This, the Northern Rome railway was designed to connect the largest number of countries and reach 102 km for funding from the state.
A higher frequency of trains, especially in trafficking Civita Castellana - Viterbo, would favor a steady increase in passengers. The supply creates demand.
It' is typical what happened on the railway Rome Cesano, a higher frequency
of trains has led to a disproportionate increase of travelers.
Railway lines such as Merano - Malles, Fortezza - San Candido, Bolzano - Brenner, following a policy that promotes the train, are now active. The countries affected by the Northern Rome
Railroad, are rich in monuments and history and therefore have a strong appeal for tourism, also sports lovers "mount bike", have an excellent route of about 52 km, located in Fabrica di Roma, while lovers of trekking path can discover unspoilt nature, from Soriano nel Cimino to Three Crosses.
